LeBron James as a Changemaker. A changemaker is someone with the knowledge, talent, and resources to create positive changes in our society. Changemakers motivate others, problem-solve, and try to improve the quality of life for those around them. Modernly, one of the best known changemakers is arguably LeBron James. Many people recognize LeBron as being one of the top basketball players of all-time; however, his reach is much broader than basketball alone. Through education, community support, social activism, and philanthropic efforts, LeBron James has leveraged his successes to open doors for others and positively affected society.
LeBron James was born in Akron, Ohio, on December 30th, 1984. LeBron grew up with numerous challenges. Some of these included having no steady income and a very unstable living situation. Despite the difficulties he experienced, LeBron continued to excel in basketball. As a result, he was one of the most highly anticipated high school athletes in history. In 2003, LeBron entered the National Basketball Association (NBA) directly from high school and was drafted as the number one overall pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Over the course of his professional basketball career, LeBron established himself as a global sports icon. He won several NBA Championships and received numerous awards and accolades. What sets LeBron apart from other influential athletes is how he chose to utilize his influence and platform to benefit others.
One of LeBron’s biggest impacts on society has been through his dedication to education. In 2018, LeBron assisted in creating the I PROMISE School in Akron, Ohio, through his nonprofit, the LeBron James Family Foundation. The I PROMISE School was created to serve at-risk students, providing students with additional support to succeed in academics and in their personal lives. While traditional schools focus primarily on academics, the I PROMISE School recognizes that there are many barriers students face outside of the classroom. To combat this, the I PROMISE School provides additional support to its students through mentorship, family support programs, and academic support services. This initiative demonstrates LeBron’s belief that education is a powerful force for combating poverty and creating opportunities for future generations.
While the I PROMISE School serves as a resource for students attending the school, LeBron’s foundation has also invested in educational opportunities for students that meet specific requirements through scholarship funding and college opportunities. By investing in education, LeBron is enabling youth to pursue their goals that previously appeared unattainable. In doing so, he illustrates that making a change does not only mean solving problems now, but rather creating opportunities for youth to experience success in the future.
In addition to his work supporting education, LeBron James has been a vocal supporter of social justice and equality throughout his entire career. LeBron has continuously expressed his opinions regarding current issues impacting various communities across America. There are many professional athletes who shy away from commenting or participating in discussions regarding social injustices. Conversely, LeBron has made a point to express himself publicly while encouraging dialogue surrounding equity, fairness, and access to opportunities.
An example of this advocacy is through the founding of More Than a Vote, an organization working towards increasing voter registration and participation. More Than a Vote aims to educate citizens about the significance of voting and civic engagement. Through this endeavor, LeBron showed that changemakers can stimulate others to become involved participants in their respective communities. By promoting public discourse and empowering citizens to participate in elections and democracy, LeBron has contributed to increased civic participation.
Additionally, LeBron’s influence transcends charitable giving and community support. Through the LeBron James Family Foundation, LeBron has sponsored initiatives focused on providing aid to families, students, and community members requiring support in areas such as education, housing assistance, job training/career development, and family support services. Instead of merely providing monetary donations, LeBron has committed to developing programs that will produce enduring effects for both individual recipients and communities alike. His strategy demonstrates that lasting change is typically achieved when a commitment to long-term action is paired with intentional planning.
Finally, another aspect that contributes to LeBron James’ effectiveness as a changemaker is his inspirational appeal to millions of fans worldwide. Many fans view LeBron as a role model demonstrating how successful individuals can leverage their successes for a larger cause. Youthful athletes regularly view LeBron as a model for utilizing one’s achievements to make a positive contribution. Additionally, LeBron’s story communicates to fans that they should not allow their upbringing to dictate their potential for success or limit their capacity to contribute positively to society. LeBron has also changed the role of professional athletes. Historically, there was a belief that professional athletes would focus solely on sports and would not discuss social concerns. LeBron has demonstrated that professional athletes can lead both on and off the court. His willingness to speak out about significant issues and invest time and money into community-based programs has increased the opportunity for professional athletes to positively affect society. Other athletes and public figures are now inspired by LeBron to get involved in charitable endeavors and to raise awareness about social issues.
Some individuals may have disagreements over some of the views that LeBron has expressed during his career. However, all members of society don't need to agree with each view or action taken by a changemaker. The key is the individual’s willingness to act, address issues, and generate positive results. LeBron’s commitment to assisting others, advocating for quality education and providing opportunities for those less fortunate shows his passion for creating change in the lives of others.
Why changemaking is important is due to the fact that we live in societies that experience numerous challenges that need to be addressed through leadership and innovation. Successful individuals such as LeBron James demonstrate that success can be utilized for positive change. Regardless of whether an individual chooses to utilize their talents for education, philanthropy, community-based initiatives, or advocacy, they provide value to the world and serve as inspiration for future generations to continue working towards bettering the lives of others.
Ultimately, LeBron James is far more than simply an NBA player; he is a changemaker who utilizes his influence, assets, and platform to create positive change in our society. Through his efforts at the I PROMISE School (education), various community-based initiatives (community), charitable efforts (philanthropy), and social activism (advocacy), he has positively affected the lives of thousands of individuals. As a model for how one individual can positively affect a large number of lives and how one person can inspire others to become changemakers themselves, LeBron James provides a powerful example of how one individual can positively impact their community.
Researching LeBron James as a changemaker provided me with a broader understanding of what it means to make a difference. While achieving success is important, it is equally important for individuals to assist others and create opportunities for future generations. Before my research, I primarily viewed LeBron as an extremely talented basketball player. However, while researching LeBron, I came to realize that much of his impact occurs outside of his performance on the court. Additionally, I found his efforts in education, particularly through the I PROMISE School, to exemplify how one individual can positively impact the lives of many individuals and assist in the improvement of multiple communities.
Furthermore, researching LeBron James and his contributions made me consider how anyone can be a changemaker. Although you may never become a professional athlete or develop millions of followers, everyone has the potential to positively affect others’ lives and have a positive impact. Through utilizing his platform, LeBron created opportunities for education and community engagement, which inspired many youth to pursue their dreams. His examples demonstrate that true success can be measured by your ability to positively affect the lives of others in addition to your personal successes.
Although you were supposed to critique the presentations from all groups. I will accept this but not for a 100.
