Reflection Summary on Intercultural Communication, Group Communication, and Problem Solving

Roberto Suarez

The speech presented in class focused on several important topics related to intercultural communication, communication in groups, leadership, and systematic problem solving. Overall, I found the presentation very educational because it explained how communication affects almost every aspect of life, including relationships, teamwork, education, and professional environments. The topics discussed during the presentation helped me better understand the importance of respecting cultural differences, improving communication skills, and learning how to collaborate effectively with others. I believe the speech was meaningful because it connected many concepts that people experience in everyday situations, especially in schools, workplaces, and social environments.

Culture and communication were one of the first concepts discussed during the presentation. In his speech, the speaker mentioned that culture determines people's ways to think, communicate with other individuals, act and behave. People develop different traditions, beliefs, values, etc. These factors determine the style in which one communicates. It was said that communication consists of not only spoken language but also includes body language (gestures, facial expressions), vocal aspects (intonation, etc.), attitudes, social communication, etc. I realized that people tend to have many misunderstandings because of cultural differences when they communicate with each other. Communication styles vary greatly around the world as everyone assumes his/her style is common worldwide, which is not always true. That is why it is extremely important to study intercultural communication as nowadays we need to work and interact with representatives of diverse cultures every day.

Dominant cultures, co-cultures, and cultural identity were the following important notions covered during the presentation. They refer to the ways in which identity is affected by factors like race, ethnicity, gender, religious beliefs, age, disabilities, economic status, etc. The importance of this notion is associated with the idea that it promotes equality and inclusion. In addition, sometimes individuals belonging to certain groups experience marginalization or exclusion as society always gives priority to dominant cultures. This part showed that communication can serve either as a tool for building up unity among people or as a source of disagreement and even conflict between people. Therefore, it is important to show respect for others in order to build up friendly relationships with diverse people.

The next important part of the presentation was focused on the ways in which cultures differ. There were discussed many important concepts like individualism vs. collectivism, power distance, uncertainty avoidance, short-term orientation vs. long-term orientation, etc. All of them prove that different societies put emphasis on different values and priorities. For example, while some societies value independence and personal achievement, others prefer to rely on team work and strive to reach collective success. This part attracted my attention as it makes it clear that there is no single way of acting and thinking that exists everywhere. People often do things under the influence of culture they belong to, which is why it is necessary to give up judgment before fully comprehending others' circumstances.

The part in which the role of communication in the case of cultural differences was described proved that there is great necessity to learn about culture and its features in order to avoid stereotypical attitude towards other people. Communication styles also vary across different cultures. Sometimes misunderstandings take place very easily because people lack necessary intercultural competence. That is why it is extremely important to be ready to be flexible, understanding, respectful, etc., when interacting with others. In addition, it is possible to avoid misunderstanding by getting acquainted with another person's culture.

This part of the presentation introduced to many barriers to successful communication and ways to overcome them. They included stereotype, prejudices, ineffective listening, information deficit, etc. This topic was valuable as it helped me understand that there are multiple barriers to good communication and they negatively affect interaction of people. To deal with all those barriers, people need to learn how to actively listen to each other, demonstrate empathy and patience, adapt themselves to any circumstances, show respect, etc. It is important as often people pay too much attention to answering rather than to understanding what the interlocutor wants to say.

During the presentation, we found out that successful communication is difficult as it requires efforts from two sides and involves many difficulties. Inter-cultural communication also implies respect for the other party even if it is impossible to agree with something. The topic was really interesting as people often underestimate the importance of empathy. They fail to try to understand others and this often leads to disputes. Therefore, it is crucial to try hard to understand what others want to say.

Group communication was another important theme covered during the presentation. During his speech, the lecturer claimed that people always form groups where they interact with each other (in families, during studies, at work, etc.). Many kinds of groups were mentioned and described. Groups that function properly and help people solve tasks and achieve common goals are usually based on trust, cooperation, commitment and sharing goals. Good communication plays an essential role in achieving all these conditions.

This topic is related to me as I had a lot of experiences in working with various groups in educational institutions. I observed cases when people in the same group managed to cope with a task successfully as they communicated efficiently and distributed responsibilities equally and other groups failed to perform tasks because of inefficient communication. Group work presupposes people's responsibility for the task and willingness to cooperate. As for communication, it helps people to achieve positive results in work with groups.

This part of the presentation described the process of group formation as well as stages of their development. They include forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning. Such a sequence seems realistic as all groups go through them in reality. When forming, people often demonstrate politeness and role ambiguity; then, conflicts arise due to people's personal preferences and viewpoints. Later on, a group learns to set norms, cooperates and functions in an efficient way. The last stage involves accomplishing the tasks and disbanding the group. I understood that conflict is a normal part of group work, but it is important to deal with it in the right way. Constructive and respectful approach helps groups develop further and succeed in performing assigned tasks. Therefore, it is wrong to try avoiding conflicts; they should be discussed thoroughly to find a solution that will be beneficial for everyone. The topic seems valuable for me as it allows changing my opinion on the matter.

The concluding topic dealt with such notions as leadership and systematic problem solving. Leadership involves many different roles people can play when interacting in groups. It is very important for a group to hold effective meetings in order to solve different problems, make decisions, accomplish tasks, etc. A good leader is able to keep a group focused on its objectives and motivate people to be engaged in work. It was stated that leadership is not simply giving orders to others; it includes cooperation, assuming responsibility, etc.

Systematic problem-solving process is also an important concept covered during the presentation. The main steps that involve in this process are defining the problem, analyzing the situation, generating possible solutions, evaluating available options, choosing the best one, etc. I believe that this part is extremely valuable since people often react emotionally and make impulsive decisions. It is important to analyze the situation carefully in order to make better decision.

As far as conclusions are concerned, I can say that during the presentation, I learned many new facts concerning communication, culture, groups, teamwork, leadership, etc. It became clear that there is more to communication than just the exchange of words. Moreover, it is important to respect different views and opinions, listen actively and collaborate with others. I expect to apply gained information in various life circumstances and fields.
